Spirit2Pwn : Spirit Users Can Now Upgrade to iOS 4

Do you have an iPhone 3GS with the old bootrom, and used Spirit to jailbreak it? Now you want to upgrade to iOS4, but you think your stuck, because the current jailbreak doesn’t work with Spirited devices, right? You could try to re-jailbreak, with redsn0w, pwnage tool, or blackra1n, depending on what firmware you’re on, but now there’s an easier way.
A new patch has been released, called “Spirit2Pwn”, which allows you to use the current Pwnage Tool with a Spirited device.
You need to add a new repository to your device, to find the patch. Open Cydia, tap theManage tab, tap Edit in the top right, then tap Add in the top left. Add this source:http://repo.woowiz.net.
Then, just search for “Spirit2Pwn”, and install. It will open up your device, to allow the current Pwnage Tool to work. Take a look at the last few lines of the verbose screenshot.
Now you can use Pwnage Tool 4.0 to build a custom iOS4 firmware, and restore withiTunes. This will not work with newer bootrom models. Spirit2Pwn is only for older bootrom iPhone 3GS, that was jailbroken with Spirit. If you’re jailbreaking your iPhone 3G, you can just use the most recent version of Redsn0w.
I have confirmed this to work on an iPhone 3GS, with older bootrom, that was jailbroken with Spirit. If you follow me on Twitter, you might remember a few months back, I bought an iPhone 3GS, to replace my wife’s busted iPhone 3G. I found one second hand, that was still on iPhone OS 3.1, and had old bootrom. I ended up doing an official update in iTunes, to 3.1.3, then using Spirit to jailbreak. I thought I would have to re-jailbreak, before I could update her to a jailbroken iOS 4, but I just installed this patch and my custom iOS 4 firmware worked perfectly.

Make sure everyone knows that if you shut down your iphone after installing it, it will boot back up into DFU mode automacically, that scared the heck out of me, I thought I bricked my phone!
So is it untethered?
Okay my iPhone 3gs is unlock and jailbroken on 3.1.3 on 05.12.01 on spirit is that the old one.
Ok and what about the Iphone’s with the new bootrom, is it going the have some release for the bootrom to jailbreak?
Reboot my phone and it still hasn’t turn back on, its been 5 minutes. This is scaring me, Is this normanl?

Make sure you use restore mode not DFU.

@Mike PWNAGETOOL is for macs only. I don’t know if Redsn0w works though with this spirit2pwn
I am jailbroke & unlocked with a 3 GS New bootrom, 3.1.3 and I am staying right here where I am. I will never use anything NOT done by the dev team. I also have a 3 GS on IOS4 not jailbroke/unlocked for now. I hate it but I have my blobs saved on cydia for 3.1.2 & 3.1.3 and I am going back down as soon as I get a new pc asine crashed
@Mike redsn0w and pwnagetool are the same just in different formats. So says macrumors in their forums
Sorry I meant to say will go back down to 3.1.2 as soon as I get a new pc as mine crashed. Note: I also do NOT update any of my apps to the 4.0 either whether from the app store or from cydia. No reason to as I am not on 4.0 and everything works perfectly. No reason to as I don’t want to mess up anything on my iPhone. I waited almost 6 months for the jailbreak/unlock !!!
Had 3GS old bootrom on 3.1.3+spirit. Used this and then restored 4.0 firmware patched by sn0wbreeze-V1.6.2. iOS4 Works perfectly, untethered, JB ok. This is not a fake. Maybe a bit too confusing for noobs though. Would be better is someone bundled the whole process into a single-click tool.
I wonder if they will jailbreak new bootrom for the 3gs can’t wait for that so I can update to 4.0
@Evilintent they will but it won’t be from redsn0w or Ultrasn0w PWNAGETOOL because you need to choose the firmware. This is only possible if you jailbreak from Geohot or Comex. I’m waiting for their jailbreak to come out. I’m on 3.1.3 spirited jb
@Chup write up the steps you took to do your untethered jailbreak. I have the same situation you do and I’m sure others do too.
@Daniel hope this helps:
1) you must already have 3.1.3+spirit working ok and you are syncing with itunes ok
2) make sure you have old bootrom (i used iDetector-V1.0)(if you have “new” bootrom you can’t continue)
3) download sn0wbreeze-V1.6.2 and use it to patch the 4.0 ipsw from apple. I used the simple mode and didn’t hactivate (I have a legit att sim and account). Make sure you can find the new ipsw file on your desktop.
4) reboot phone to make sure everything is ok before you start
5) open cydia, add the iwoowiz source, install spirit2pwn (takes about 30 seconds to flash the pwnd iboot)
6) reboot phone to make sure you can still boot ok
7) connect to itunes and let it make a backup and sync
9) itunes goes through the usual restore process. Takes about 20 minutes. note that I didn’t put the phone into “recovery” mode or anything — it was still plugged in after the sync that just finished.
10) when restore is done you are prompted by itunes to either set up as a “new iphone” or you can restore your last backup. I restored my backup. Took about an hour for the restore to finish.
F*ck that I’m not risking my phone on something unconfirmed, I’m patient not stupid.
Gonna wait for white iphone4 and a confirmed jb before I even consider it, meanwhile I’ve seen too many people gutted they have installed ios4 and then realized that actually it’s a bit shit

@SSS: no, I didn’t modify hosts. This process doesn’t use saved shshs at all (they are needed only when you restore a firmware apple is no longer signing).

@Chup, I was able to successfully get the jailbroken 4.0 os on my 3gs old bootrom, but i am not able to connect to itunes, it says “Itunes could not connect to this phone because unknown erro occured (0xE8000065)” message. Can you please let me know if you got the same issue or you know how to get past this issue. Thanks!!

@SSS I got the same message. But I don’t recomend you jailbreak for 4.0 because alot of the tweak don’t work and you might get in a safety mode loop. However I do recomend that you upgrade with Sn0wbreeze and use TinyUmbrella to save ur shsh
And then downgrade to 3.1.x and jailbreak with Spirit

plssss SOMEBODY HELP ME.. i add dis woowiz.net on cydia, after i install spirit2pwn…. den respring my iphone 3gs.. after that it never turn on again.. it stuck on dfu mode…! i try restoring and updating it on itunes to i os4 but has error 28..!! plss help me.. it just stuck on blackscreen.. dfu mode.. i oso try holding the home and power button thing but nothing happen.. I had the same exact problem and I was able to get out by going to the ih8sn0w website and downloading ireb even though I had ipod touch 3g
I ran the application on the computer and said that I had an ipod 1g and ran it.
afterwords I was able to restore.
I have a 3GS and a Mac. Stuck in spirit2pwn’s DFU mode. There isn’t a mac ireb is there. Especially for 3GS. What do I do? Thanks.
P.S. I know it’s a lot to download but it’s worth it
