iOS 4.0.1 Coming Tomorrow? iPhone 4, 3GS and iPT3G Owners Save your 4.0 SHSH files NOW!

There are rumors everywhere about an update to iOS 4 already and a new user-land jailbreak found by @comex for iOS 4.0.
iPhone OS 4.0

The antenna problem has mounted such an outcry that Apple will release a software “fix” for this apparent hardware issue as soon as tomorrow, Monday, June 28. That means that the next hours are your only chance to get your SHSH on file for future restores to iOS 4.0. If the update kills whatever has just been found, you will never be able to restore back to 4.0, and lose the opportunity to Jailbreak your iPhone 4 if you upgrade.

NOTE: If your device is already Jailbroken, Cydia will save the hashes for you automatically.

I just saved my SHSH for 4.0 for my iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, and iPod Touch 3G using The Firmware Umbrella. The developer, known as @notcom, provides a simple solution for storing your files. To store your files, simply:

  1. DOWNLOAD the .dmg for Mac or the .exe for Windows.
  2. Move the application to your Applications folder. (it will run from any folder though)
  3. Open “Umbrella”, and make sure your iDevice is plugged in.
  4. Hit “Save My SHSH”

Tiny Umbrella

To Restore to Firmware relevant to saved SHSH blobs:

  1. Modify your hosts file; add “127.0.0.1 gs.apple.com” to the end of your “hosts” file
  2. Open Umbrella.
  3. Select Start TSS server.
  4. Restore.

Why can’t 3G owners backup their SHSH with the umbrella app? If it’s automatically stored on Cydia, how does one access it?

  9. im stuck at 3.1.3 (3GS MC model).. does this mean that ill probably wont be able to upgrade to 4.0?

  10. Gotta start the TSS server to restore locally to an older firmware. Edit your etc/hosts file before you try to restore and RESTART your computer.

  11. @xSnow,

Please provide the steps to downgrade, that would be very helpful..

    Thanks!!

  12. @Kavan,

Ok, i got it restored to 3.1.3 from 4.0 successfully, Basically saving the shsh on 4.0 using the tiny umbrella screws up the formatting of your host file. All u need to do is Open host as administrator, format it properly, see google for the sample host files: http://www.electrictoolbox.com/edit-hosts-file-windows-vista/

Then add the gs.apple host ip
Save the host file. Restart the pc, put your phone in DFU mode,
    Shift+restore to 3.1.3 firmware.
You should be good to go, if you get 1xxx errors use recboot and exit out of recovery mode.

  13. Thanks for the info, I would have missed it…
