How To Jailbreak iOS 4.0.1 for iPhone 3G Only Using RedSn0w
Thanks to Redmondpie, here is a handy guide to jailbreak iOS 4.0.1 on your iPhone 3G. (NO 3GS Support)
iOS 4.0.1 has been released for iPhone 4, 3GS and 3G. While the iPhone 4 and 3GS users will have to wait for a new jailbreak tool, iPhone 3G can go ahead and jailbreak their phone on iOS 4.0.1 using Redsn0w 0.9.5b5-5. Again, this is strictly for iPhone 3G only. All other iOS based devices will be jailbreakable once Comex releases his new jailbreak tool.
Step 1: Download iOS 4.0.1 for your version of iPhone. Download links are posted here.
Step 2: Update to this latest firmware using the IPSW file you just downloaded via iTunes 9.2.
Step 3: Start Redsn0w 0.9.5b5-5 (download link given below) and point it to iOS 4 (Final Version), and not iOS 4.0.1 firmware file to proceed with the jailbreak.
Step 4: Now select “Install Cydia” and click “Next”.
Step 5: Now make sure your device is both OFF and PLUGGED IN to the computer before you click “Next”.
Step 6: Connect your device in recovery mode by pressing the Power and buttons continuously.
At this stage you will be presented with a screen where you will have to quickly hold “Power” button and then while holding the “Power” button, you will now have to hold “Home” button too. Now after few seconds release “Power” button but keep holding “Home” button until installation begins.
Step 7: Sit back and enjoy while redsn0w will do all the rest for you. Once done, youriPhone and/or iPod touch will restart automatically and you will find it jailbroken on the latest iOS 4.0.1 firmware.

Why would I want to upgrade? I got tricked once with features not for the iPhone 3G , it won’t happen again until awesome features come.

So what, the features from4.01 doesn’t work on the 3g? and do you need to restore your phone before doing this jailbreak, because Im currently running off blackra1n. Any help?
@Jordan You should upgrade to 4.0.1 when you do the restore. However I am running a 3gs 3.1.3 Spirited. And when I upgraded to 4.0 I was put into safe mode loop. So I would do it ONLY to save your shsh
So will people with the new bootrom 3gs 3.1.3 ever be able to upgrade to 4.0 ?

I am completely dumb to this stuff, is there any way that you can tell me how to restore. When I got my phone the sale rep cracked it, so I have no idea what do to really.

Jailbroke it. Everything that has to do with jailbreakin was done for me, so I’m not too sure what to do and I don’t wanna screw anything up lol.
Well first I would download TinyUmbrella and save your shsh’s.
Then download your firmware file and redsn0w it.
That should be it. But I’ve never used Redsn0w before
I had someone tell me too that it is possible to screw up my “baseband” by going through the process because 4.0 doesn’t have support for 3g iphones. So is upgrading really worth it, like multi tasking and such, or would it be better not to screw with?
It’s not worth it at all. It’s still pretty buggy I’m sure cause Apple has worked on os4 for what? A year or so (I don’t know actually how long). Backgrounder has been around for alot longer and I have yet to have a glitch at all. And winterboard is a lot more customizable than os4. Even though I’ve been put into a safe mode loop once with jailbroken 4.0. But 4.0.1 does have good looking folders although cydia does have PogoPlank
Yeah thanks for the advice. I have folders currently on my phone, but it was more for the multi tasking. By any chance do you know if there would be more apps from something like installous available on ios4?
One last question, does anyone know if the “appsync 4.0 patch” downloaded thru cydia allows you to keep your jb while running 4.0?
Appsync is for syncing your cracked apps with iTunes. So it has nothing to do with your jailbreakability

I didn’t even bother with it… I just installed prosn0w for multitasking and categories for folders. I’m happy with what I got now.
Well I was trying to test my understanding of jailbreaking. But I get that you don’t want fm risk it
I followed the instructions but when i open redsn0w and browse to the ios4 (i have already upgraded my phone to ios4.0.1) but it says it is unable to recognize the specified IPSW. What is the problem?
I don’t know. I’ve never used redsn0w before. Try deleting redsn0w and downloading it again and the firmware and retry. Your iPhone might need to have it’s shsh saved first (I’m 50% sure about this)
