GeoHot’s “Meh”
Meh. The title of GeoHot’s most recent, and long awaited, blog post on the iPhone 4 Jailbreak situation. This blog post has stirred a huge controversy and frankly, I have lost a lot of respect for GeoHot. And it’s not because I feel like he owes us anything. He doesn’t. Lets recall his career.
The guy is a genius, he was the first person to hardware unlock an iPhone. He started a little known blog when he first was donated an iPhone for unlocking testing. His very first post:
Thanks to jpetrie, who donated an iPhone to the cause, I have an iPhone to take apart. I will be posting to this blog as I take it apart and discover things.
After becoming famous and making TV appearances, he finally traded this iPhone for a Car:
I traded it for a sweet Nissan 350Z and 3 8GB iPhones
Did that seem fair?
At the very beginning, this was the voice of a young man, a teenager who was interested in technology and excited to share information with the world. His first writings were directed for the technologically advanced and the tips and instructions that he provided were hard for the general public to follow. He then began working on software unlocks and playing with the baseband. He assisted various jailbreaking projects, by Chronic Dev and The Dev Team. However, he was never to take credit for these early releases, nor did he want to.
He was actually working with the Dev Team for some time before he got fed up of playing the cat-and-mouse game with Apple and decided to release his own Jailbreaking tool for the new 3.0 software, PurpleRa1n. In his post dated July 3, 2009 entitled,” I make it ra1n” he stated:
Normally I don’t make tools for the general public, and rather wait for the dev team to do it. But guys, whats up with waiting until 3.1? That isn’t how the game is played. We release, Apple fixes, we find new holes. It isn’t worth waiting because you might have the “last” hole in the iPhone. What last hole…this isn’t golf. I’ll find a new one next week. Also your purplera1nyday files ensure that you can always get back to a jailbroken state, so if you have it it’s just a matter of tools.
This was GeoHot’s first release, followed by the Purplesn0w unlock, and then the successors, BlackRa1n and Blacksn0w. This made him globally famous and really changed the type of response he was getting on his blog. And it got worse when Apple released software updates that broke his tools. They became nagging, resentful, and carried a sense of entitlement, as if Geo some how owed the world his knowledge. He became too drawn in by the fame and jaded by the negative response. No one person can make everyone happy, and he bit off more than he could chew.
I really can’t say how he could’ve done it better or how I personally would have been immune to the pressure and abuse put on him by thousands. He is human. But to taunt us, or to release fake images just to show us all how smart he is? To entice us with the notion of a Jailbreak that will never see the light of day or does not exist at all? That is wrong.
What happened to the iPad Jailbreak he apparently developed in one day? It would be ok if he were waiting for the right time to release, even if that contradicts what he said just one year ago. But that is not the case, he clearly states in his latest post that his latest image of a Jailbroken iPhone 4 was a fake:
Also, to the haters, the picture is quite obviously fake

A direct stab back at those who should not have ever been dignified with a response. There are people who understand Geo and fully appreciate everything that was given and expect nothing. This is who he developed the ra1n and sn0w for, and if he no longer cares to help us all out, fine, just don’t be a D about it.
The word “meh” seems to sum up the attitude he has developed and the way I view him as a “hero”.

I’ll donate him some money If he will release new unlock with jail for iPhone 4.
Meh I don’t think he can jailbreak 4.0 so he tells ppl he does not want to and is not interested in it
The guy obviously needs to walk away, take a break, and shut down his blog already, or risk everyone thinking of him as a jerk. I don’t “expect” anything from him that I don’t expect from everyone else. All I expect from anyone is a little civility.
Always a bitch! See ya douche. I’ve been jailbreaking since the original iPhone, when it was technical and took some understanding. Like anything as time goes on, things get easier, isn’t that what it’s all about? Back then there were few people who were willing to take the risk and jump on the ‘jailbreak’ bandwagon. Now because of GeoHot and the Dev Team there are millions of people around the world who have freed their devices from Apple. I agree, ‘meh’ take a break, but don’t be a whiny lil’ prick.
I have to agree with t on that You guysjust got to focus on comex I think he’s the answer to to all
I think he is a genius u couldn’t do the shit he does but he is a prick and to imature and it shows! I appreciate everything he has done and everything the dev team has done but the pressure must be Ge tying to him!
He has a lot better things to do with his time than to duplicate something that is probably going to be released soon by dev team
Thank you, thank you and thank you. This what I was trying to explain in my other post where @Will caught his period. Hope now ya motha fuckaz know what I meant when I said Geo is just a ignorant prick who is all about fame and nothing of his words.
@Will: go tree fuck ur self bitch.
He is plenty capable of doing this but comex and the guys are already finishing up theirs with a new redsn0w for upcoming os4. Everyone chill out and wait a bit
