It detects and maps the location of all nearby cell towers so that the user can easily get a good idea of their cellular coverage or where to go to get the best cellphone reception. Combined with the free iPhone carrier unlock that planetbeing has helped create, a user can swap SIMs and determine which carrier is best for him or her based on cellular coverage. In addition the map, other useful technical data is displayed including RSCP (signal strength) in dBm and Ec/N0 (signal quality) to all neighbours, the PSC of the cells, as well as the frequency each cell is broadcasting in.

Frequently asked questions

How come there are only a few lines when I open Signal?

When your iPhone is in 3G mode, it takes some time before Signal can figure out where they are located and be able to draw them on the map (and draw lines connecting your current location with them). Leave it on for a few hours or take your iPhone on a walk and it should “learn” the locations of the cells faster (you only need to do this once since they are stored on flash). If you turn off 3G, you can quickly acquire the location of nearby 2G towers. A more technical answer is that for UMTS, cell ID is not decoded from the layer 3 data so this information is unavailable without altering the baseband firmware. However, as the iPhone camps on more and more local cells, it will learn to associate a cell ID with a certain downlink frequency and primary scrambling code within a locality. This lets it know the location area code and cell ID for UMTS neighbor cells that it has associated with before and be able to plot them on the map.

Most of you are probably familiar with graphic designer Surenix’s popular WinterBoard theme called ayecon. The theme comes with a built-in tweak that lets the user choose between having the stock folder grid appearance, or switching to 2×2 grids.

Surenix has released a standalone jailbreak tweak called 2×2 Folder Icons in Cydia that will allow users to have this same 2×2 folder grid effect on devices without the ayecon WinterBoard theme. As shown above, the 3 columns and 3 rows (default) of folder icons have been changed to 2 columns and 2 rows after the tweak was installed and enabled.

After installing the tweak, you will be able to head over to the Settings application and visit the preferences pane for the tweak. From the preferences pane, you will be able to enable and disable the tweak on demand. Each time you change a setting, you’ll have to respring the device – luckily, the tweak comes with a hand little respring button:

The 2×2 folder icon layout is a nice little modification for those of you that want to clean up the look of those cluttered folder icons. The tweak is currently available in the BigBoss repository of Cydia for 99¢, however if you own ayecon already, the tweak will be free to you.

Name: 2×2 Folder Icons
Price: 99¢
Version: 1.0-1
Repo: BigBoss
Developer: Surenix

iOS 6.1.3 Beta Patches Jailbreak – Warning! DO NOT UPDATE!

Apple doesn’t like jailbreaks. Never has, never will… which is why it’s odd that the evasi0n jailbreak, first unleashed to the world with iOS 6.1, has seen two small bug fix releases of iOS come and go — iOS 6.1.1 and iOS 6.1.2 — that don’t fix the exploit.

According to a recent report from Forbes, the iOS 6.1.3 beta 2 firmware indeed patches the evasi0n iOS 6.x Untethered Jailbreak. Forbes has gotten official confirmation that at least one of the five vulnerabilities used by evsai0n has been patched, the one in question relating to a flaw in the operating system’s time zone settings.

Security researchers have nonetheless pointed out that Evasi0n could give criminals or spies some nasty ideas. The tool uses five distinct bugs in iOS, all of which might be appropriated and combined with other techniques for malicious ends. And F-Secure researcher Mikko Hypponen points out that if a hacker used a Mac or Windows exploit to compromise a user’s PC, he or she could simply wait for the target to plug in an iPhone or iPad and use evasi0n to take over that device as well.

If Apple does actually end up patching all of the bugs used by the current evasi0n Jailbreak, Wang says the Evad3rs posses enough exploits to develop a completely new Jailbreak, which will likely be saved for iOS 7.

Forbes speculated that Apple took longer to patch exploits for evasi0n compared to past jailbreaks due to the fact that it was a standalone tool rather than a web app like the previous Jailbreakme 3.0 release. Evasion has been released for approximately three weeks and could stick around for another month or so before Apple publicly releases 6.1.3. The jailbreak is said to be the most popular yet with a record 7 million downloads in the first four days.

We made f.lux because one day we noticed that all our laptops were the wrong color temperature at night. They looked fine during the day, but at night, they were much too blue. We realized that looking at the sun all night long might not be such a good idea.

After researching blue light’s effects on health, we found lots of evidence that color matters even more than brightness. And it turns out that timing matters, too: Blue light during the day is great for your circadian rhythm. Blue light at night is not.

Sleep researchers have just begun studying the effects of night-time usage of laptops, cell phones, iPads and other devices that emit blue light. Evidence suggests that even just a little extra blue light at night can keep you awake later and negatively affect the quality of your sleep.

Our users say that f.lux prevents eyestrain. They also say that it’s easier to wind down and go to sleep after using a f.lux-enabled device at night. Plus, you’ll never glow blue in a restaurant again.

You can use f.lux because it makes you sleep better, or you could use it because it just makes you look better. Either way your eyes will thank you.

Trouble sleeping?

If you have sleep trouble or you’re trying to learn more about sleep in general, we recommendunderstandingsleep.org.

Blue Light Affects Sleep (and here’s why)

We know that night-time exposure to blue light keeps people up late. We believe that f.lux adjusts colors in a way that greatly reduces the stimulating effects of blue light at night.

To understand the effects of f.lux on sleep, we’ve spoken with some researchers, and we’ve read a whole lot of papers.

The science that explains why blue light keeps you up was begun many years ago in the study of bird migration, and it continued in humans with the discovery of a new photoreceptor in the eye, calledMelanopsin. Many are familiar with the “rods and cones” that provide our visual capabilities, but it was only about 15 years ago that retinal ganglion cells containing melanopsin, which are sensitive to a narrow band of blue light in the 460-480nm range, were discovered, and their unique effect on sleep was investigated.

The experimental research suggests that an average person reading on a tablet for a couple hours before bed may find that their sleep is delayed by about an hour. Clearly, the details are complicated, but that’s why we get to cite so many very interesting papers.

Popular press coverage of blue light research

In Eyes, a Clock Calibrated by Wavelengths of Light
cites work by Cajochen et al in the May issue of The Journal of Applied Physiology.

Christian Cajochen did the first work we know of that uses real LED displays and measures them against older computer monitors. Many studies before this used light sources that you could believe were “like” these newer displays, but this paper tests the exact kind of backlight that we all use many hours a day.

Blue Light

David C. Holzman does a survey paper on the effects of blue light, with citations as early as 1958.
