GeoHot — Gone for Good
GeoHot has recently suspended his Twitter account, and his infamous iphonejtag blogspot website has become viewable via invite only. Hotz tweeted yesterday, saying he was fed up with the constant complaints and hate from the community. He wants to move on from the iPhone hacking scene, after all, he Tweeted that iPhone hacking was more of something he did when bored.
George Hotz (better known as geohot to the Jailbreak community), is recognized as the first person to achieve a hardware unlock on the original iPhone. He has done some work with the iPhone Dev Team, and Chronic Dev Team as well….Relations with these teams were strained however, when Hotz -going against the Dev Team’s philosophy of waiting for Apple’s next update- took it upon himself to develop Purplera1n, a jailbreak for OS 3.0 . After Apple released OS 3.1, Hotz developed arguably one of the fastest and easiest to use Jailbreaks ever: Blackra1n.
Hotz has also claimed to have hacked the PS3, allowing for custom firmware creation. He hasn’t released any tools to do so however, except a low level code execution which can only be run via linux, which has been removed by Sony in a recent software update. George Hotz has done a lot for the iPhone and hacking community as a whole. Among other things, Hotz blamed constant heckling for a release, and impatience from the community as a whole is what coaxed him to leave the community.
Maybe this will open the eyes of some of the people out there who expect hackers to give them what they want, when they demand it. I’ve always said that patience is key when you want something. Hopefully jailbreakers out there re-evaluate themselves as a whole, so that an entire Jailbreaking community won’t be lost.
On the flipside, however, many feel that Geohot was just in it for popularity, and held out on jailbreaks to become that much more popular….What do you guys think? Was it right for Hotz to leave? From what I’ve seen, I would’ve made the same decision. But it pains me to see this kind of talent leave the community.

He has done a lot for the community, and while I do agree their are more mature and better hackers out there, I think we lost a great hacker.

We have lost a great iPhone hacker. And I would have done the same if people were nagging, yelling, demanding things. What all of you must understand is that guys like geohot does this in there free time and out of interest while the rest of us are not clever enough to do what they do. Some people here should be ashamed of themselves.
I for one thank geohot and all others for the great work and hope they will continue.

He’s obviously super-smart, but also obviously is immature and insecure. Hope he is mentally and physically healthy, and returns to the game when he’s ready.

You must be Young andvinexperinced. If you Would have done any real programming you would know that it takes a lot of time and effort to do programscthat cover all possible scenarios especially whe jsilbreaking.

@Eddie: what the f*** are you smoking? He was not the first one to come out with JB he only made blackra1n and as he said he was bored. Even BR was not complete and we had to get stuck with tether the iPhone which was really suck for some. Geo is only show off. I am not mad the fact he is quitting or not doing enough I am only pissed at his iggnorant attitude and fake achievements he is just a f***in show off.
@John: yea, i couldnt agree more. Geohot could have been gained the communitys respect bck but by leavin the scene only makes him lose it evn more. It was all a game for him, he was good but def not the best. The so-called community doesnt need him, we will be just fine here

Maybe Apple, Microsoft, Google, should stop working on updates, new products etc, cause lots of people complain about/to them also.

Well he was an ok hacker and all but by him leaving because of some people wanting or demanding things just shows he is young and very immature to let it get to him I will note that many people were very upset as we had to wait 6 months till finalyyvspirit had the balls to finallly release the 3.1.3 jaibreal. I am sure there were thousands of people who nought their iPhones that came with the 3.1.3 and they could not use thier phones because there were on t-mobile, etc. I for one had to wait 5 months gor the spirit and it came with the new firware and not cause I was stupid enough to update through iTunes. We still have many great people on the dev-team who Ivan sure will continue to take down the apple monoplily who tries to force us to bide by their unjustly rules!! Kelp up the great work for all of the others who will continue to help is consumers. For all their hard work I feel it would be justified to have to donate to get thus jailbreak @ unlocks.

I just want to add to my post above tat sure he has talent and if he has jailbroke the new 4.0 then why suit now. Please grow up and share with us your new exploits. It does seem he did in on part gor the glory and attention as he had his picture show on the blackrain he made. But no one van force Jim to do something he does not want to do nut agIn if he has née exploits. He SHOULD share them with the community before he leaves for good.
I can’t believe how people react to a pioneer. Just reading the post would either make me quite or charge some outragous price for all my time, knowledge. & efort. I don’t care what kind of person he is, I just thank him for his efforts. They say give a bum a dime for four days & on the fifth he will ask U where’s my dime.

Well, in my humble opinion, George is just like many youngsters and unable yet to deal with the rough and tumble of this bad old world.
He is smart kid and I’m sure he will make his mark. Blackrain did it for me early on. Spirit keeps my 3GS on 3.1.3 and here I will stay for now!
This reminds me a lot of what happened on the sattelite TV hacking scene here i Denmark some years ago..
A small group was hacking, managing, and distributin the keys for the public. At the end it was made so easy for everyone, “insert smartcard, and Press *.exe”
But every time the networks changed keys the public screamed there heads of, wanting Keys NOW… And i dont mean one or two days after change. No, minutes after change the sathack chats where glowing with people dammding keys

But the end of the story is that after some time it got to much, and the hackers pulled the plug.
Having tried being in the recieving end of the demanding public, i Can in some way understand GeoHot, but he should have walked quietly..
All you have to do is read the comment section of this article. F*** this, F*** that. And not just the actual children online, but as well the childlike adults. Anonymity allows so many people, who usually are quite meek & lonely,
to act out in verbal severity. He worked hard at what he did for the challenge and positive recognition, he didn’t realize how consistantly crappy people are when hiding online. I appreciated his work as an end consumer, and hope his next endevor proves challenging. I also hope we don’t continue to lose more gifted artists who are afraid to put there work out there because of faceless scared greedy leeches, who lonely & pathetic, demand and insult instead of praise and compliment.

He has caused quite a few problems and possibly made an impact on medical research with the ps3 crap tho just wish he’d av stuck to the iPhone because now millions of people have lost the other OS feature and now medical and army can no longer use ps3′s for development all because of 1 guy and he didn’t even do what he promised and make a custom firmware with other OS to right his wrongs.

Wow. Such angst. Doesn’t matter what Geohot did or what he is capable of. The point is he left. So why worry about him? he made the choice.
As for future jailbreaks there will be others to fill his shoes.
I am quite sure the hacking world will get along just fine, as will the Army. Its not like Geohot single handedly hacked the iphone. If I recall he had a good amount of help with it.
Looking blame as to why he left is pointless. In the end he left. he could have just closed off email and his blog and just kept posting the software. Yet he made a desicion to leave. I wish him well in the future. As for jailbreaking iOS 4….I await the next guy in line.
He’ll probably come back after cooling off a bit. Yes people programming Is not as easy as some of you would like to think I’m a programmer myself so I know from exp. It takes time….sometimes ALOT of time….just look at the videos about unlocking ios4.0 dude was up all night workin on it and still isn’t completely finish… Not sayin it was right/goodfor geo to leave but he really doesn’t get anything for doing his skills but Attention and a thank you here and there. did people really expect someone that was helping them allow them to just demand things of him when you’re getting it for free? Cmon people have a lil patience either that or just learn how to program…..then and only then will you understand why geo is upset

As mentioned by Dennis Jensen this has happened before in the sat scene. In many of the iPhone forums you see constant outcries from people wanting this or that information. They whine and complain. I certainly understand why the gifted hackers loose interest after a while. It’s not like they like to spend all their time hacking things for free. There is only so much time you can put down to hacking. Hacking does not pay any bills, remember that.
I doubt that people would accept to first do a full time work or study and then spend the rest of you waking time with pleasing all the losers. There is other things to life.
Be happy there is guys doing this work for free otherwise we can all kiss our jailbreaks goodbuy. Because most of us are not skilled enough to do thing like this.
And show some appreciation for their work! That might inspire them to continue the good work.
