Windows Live Messenger for iPhone Now Available
Microsoft’s Windows Live Messenger for the iPhone is now available on the iTunes App Store.
Windows Live Messenger is Microsoft’s fourth (free) application for the iOS platform and was first shown at The Next Web conference earlier this year. Looks like the Windows Live Messenger app for iPhone has just hit the App Store – but it only landed in certain regions (iTunes link
), just like Microsoft’s Bing for iPhone app.
The iOS app brings the new Windows Live Messenger Wave 4 features with it. Integration with Facebook, Flickr, Skydrive and other services.

iWhiteboard by Andy Aude was recently released on Cydia through BigBoss, and it will be used in the creation of iFile 101.

As promised, Yoshi and I have been working on our future post, iFile 101. We envision it as a guide for those who wish to possess more knowledge and control of their iDevice. It is intended to enrich the understanding of those who have some, and open the floodgates for those who have none. It is our gift back to the community, our way of saying thanks to the all the Devs that gave the “special abilities” to our devices and especially to Carstein Heinelt, the creator of iFile. We wish it to be a trusted resource and intend it to be a work in progress. We will accept written and video contributions from those who wish to add content to iFile 101, upon approval of course, and we will take requests for updates to the guide.

Read MorePwned Elite Theme Completes Your iDevice!
Everyone has favorite apps. Those that they could not live without. But what about themes? There are so many visual masterpieces to chose from on Cydia and Rock. I personally like to change my theme all the time. I have also been known to mod and mash themes together. I was recently given the gift of Pwned Elite, by its creator, Daniel Meese (@dcmeese) for this review:
This developer has created something special with this theme. It is not the most overboard or dramatic theme available for Winterboard, but it is simple, artistic and pays homage to the Dev Team, the iPhone OS and our favorite tech deviance, Jailbreaking. Why is it a paid theme? It also includes a matching SBsettings theme, Voice Control theme, Pogo Plank theme, Categories add-on pack, one of a kind mod to Doodle Jump and many extras! The completeness and coherency of this theme is definitely worth the $1.99.
The icons are square and mostly stock designed, with a few exceptions, and Pwned Elite uses an icon mask to auto create your app store app icons, this insures that every app you download and view in the app store is themed. A very special feature for me is the dock, specially made for five icons. It is so simple, its just a black bar with 5 glowing lights, but it is elegant and perfect for those that use a five icon dock or Infinidock. It also looks fantastic when stretched in landscape mode, thanks to SBrotator. This theme completes my iPhone (for now). I will probably mod this theme eventually, but it is very well done and my new favorite.
The only things that are missing from this theme can be easily overcome:
1. Springboard strings, or custom text in the “slide to unlock” bar and notifications, etc. This can be accomplished with MyStrings or one could copy/paste an en.iproj folder from another theme into Pwned Elite.theme/ Bundles/com.apple.springboard and “overwrite” the folder.
2. Carrier logo. Carrier logos can be downloaded separately, or use MakeItMine, available in Cydia.
If you enjoyed this review, please support @dcmeese and purchase this package on Rock, or in Cydia from ModMyI. This theme is a must have for fans of Pwnage Tool, Pogo Plank, SBsettings and Doodle Jump. For questions and review requests, find me on Twitter @xsn0w.
Note: I accept free packages under the agreement that I may write an unbiased review of the product.

Why the blackberry tablet will fail
There’s been a lot of speculation on the Internet in response of the leaked photos of the rumoured Blackberry tablet. I can see why RIM would want to break into this highly lucrative market, but I reckon it may not be the best move for them. Here’s why…
The Blackberry OS isn’t designed for touch.
My main phone is a blackberry curve. To be frank, I love the OS; but can see the drawbacks of using it with touch. It was designed (rather well) to be used with a trackball, with touch added as a very late afterthought. I have used Storms before, and in comparison to either iPhone OS or Android (which are easy and intuitive to use) it’s just plain clunky. RIM needs to scrap its touch os and rebuild it from scratch in order to get anywhere near the usability of iPhone or android.
There’s not the full range of apps in comparison to the iPad
One of the biggest selling points of the iPad is the range of apps available. Granted, there is a lot of junk out there, *cough* fart apps *cough*, but a high proportion are incredibly useful. There are countless twitter apps for iPhone OS, whereas blackberry OS has about four. There are countless games, taking advantage of the incredibly fast proccessor and large screen. Don’t get me wrong, there are games for blackberry, but they are nowhere near the standard of the ones found for iPhone OS. Like it or not, there just simply isn’t the choice for the blackberry OS.
RIM have a bad reputation in the touchscreen market.
Remember the flop that was the storm? Yeh, so do prospective tablet buyers. The repuatation RIM built up from the unquestionable fail that was the storm will be hard to shake off. Sure, they may have got their act together, but consumers will stick to what they know, going for an iPad.
RIM is a company for businesses, not consumers.
RIM’s stronghold is the workplace. Although, with the new curves and the storm2 RIM is making inroads in the consumer markets, it still has a long way to go before it makes a serious dent. Because of this, moms and so called “silver surfers” (who are one of the main markets for tablets) won’t have experience of RIM and won’t buy it.
It’s codenamed “cobalt”
What sort of name’s this? It’s not even blue. ‘Nuff said.
Although I think the Blackberry tablet is destined to be the next beta-max, I hope RIM manages to overcome all of these points and manages to produce something seriously worth buying.

Griffin PowerBlock Charges Your iPad Faster
There’s a lot of ways to recharge an iPad—thank you, USB—but the iPad is finicky. For a portable, it has high power requirements, high enough to cause problems for some people. (It even has its own support document.)
Apple iPad’s battery life is nothing short of amazing. But, the time it takes to charge it seems to be another story.
You can charge your iPad with the standard 10W iPad Apple charger or hook it up to your MacBook Pro or use a 3rd party power charger. But, which battery charging is going to make your Apple iPad the happiest?
Gizmodo has taken this upon themselves to compare the battery chargin time with Apple standard iPad charger, Griffin PowerBlock, standard iPhone charger and MacBook Pro’s USB charger.
The results are interesting for the time it takes to get upto 80% charge. The reason for it is the first 80% is a quick charge and the last 20% goes very slowly to preserve battery life. Hence the 80% baseline.
While the standard iPad charger fared well in the test compared to others, Griffin’s PowerBlock (the newer iPad friendly 2.1 amps) seems to perform better than the standard iPad charger.
So, if you are looking for a spare charger PowerBlock could be a better option.
While charging with MacBook Pro’s USB or standard iPhone charger will do the job overnight, the straight power options win it for being quick.
Verdict
Fastest: Griffin PowerBlock (new)
Slowest: MacBook Pro USB
