Pre Plus Available from AT&T May 16th, $149 w/ Touchstone

AT&T has gone ahead and made it official on their Facebook page: the Palm Pre Plus will land this Sunday, May 16th, for $149.99 and bundled with a free Touchstone (no doubt to offset pain caused by looking at Verizon’s pricing). Them rumors, they were correct. You’ll have to mosey your way into a physical AT&T retail store to get the free charging dock, and be sure to do it early as the Touchstone offer is for a limited time – but everybody likes a Sunday drive, right?

We’re hoping / assuming that the Pixi Plus will land on the 16th as well, but no official confirmation of that just yet.

Curious how the AT&T Pre Plus stacks up? Check out our first Hands-On and also ourpreview from an insider.

Palm Pre and Pixi hardware differences

The Pre and the Pixi have been on the market together for roughly 5 months now and while we all pretty much knew that the Pixi had a smaller screen, slower processor and the non-plus version lacked WiFi, some of the more nittiy gritty details might not be common knowledge. In one of the Palm Developer Day videos we got a look under the hood.

The Palm Developer Day video in question is the ‘Optimization Under Palms 3D Hardware’ (see the slides here and the video here) that gives developers an overview of the 3D hardware capabilities of the Pre and the Pixi.  Heres what makes the two devices tick:

Its interesting to note that not only does the Pixi have the same amount of RAM as the non-Plus version of the Pre, it does indeed have a GPU that by most indications is no slouch. Per the video, the primary reason the Pixi is slower than the Pre isnt necessarily that its running the older ARMv6 architecture, but that the Pixis modem requires more system memory than that in the Pre.

All of this means that the Pixi is a surprisingly capable handset, even when considering things like the lower resolution, smaller screen and memory hungry modem.   When PDK based apps finally become available to Pixi owners, it seems clear that theyll be able to play 3D games in style with the rest of us.

O2 Pre Plus and Pixi Plus unboxed in Germany, unsurprisingly lacking in surprises

O2 Pre Plus and Pixi Plus unboxed in Germany, unsurprisingly lacking in surprises: ”

So there you have it, the Palm Pre Plus and its box, of the GSM variety that’s headed to O2 Germany. After nearly a year now, the packaging hasn’t changed a bit, nor have the included goodies: suede-ish bag, modular charger and cable, various how-to pamphlets, etc. The Pixi Plus, also of the O2-bound GSM variety, is unboxed after the break by the folks at Pre Ticker of Germany.

Thanks to Shadow-360 for the tip!

Palm Pixi Now Free Through Sprint's Website

It was only a matter of time before the WiFi-less, Sprint bound Pixi dropped to “free with a 2-year contract” pricing on the smallest of the big 4 domestic carriers, and you can now hit Sprint’s online portal to get the diminutive smartphone for the sweet sweet price of zero dollars with a new contract.  As is generally the case with Sprint, brick and mortar corporate stores can’t match the web pricing on these kinds of deals, so if you want your free Pixi through Sprint proper you’ll have to wait a few days after ordering, or wait until in-store pricing inevitably follows suit.

New in the Palm App Catalog for 15 April 2010

Yo, there be apps. With the most recent app drop the US App Catalog is slowly creeping towards 2000 (sitting at 1985 right now). But if you roll in all the apps available internationally, that number jumps to 2169. And that’s not including everything available in the web distribution, beta, and homebrew feeds, the available packages. Does it compare to what you can get in other app stores? Quantity-wise, not really. But we’re not concerned with quantity as the only metric of our platform-of-choice’s success. We want quality apps more than just a lot of apps. Is that what we got yesterday? Well, that’s a hard to define metric, so we’ll just let you look at the list after the break and draw your own conclusions.
