How To Jailbreak iOS 4.0.1 for iPhone 3G Only Using RedSn0w
Thanks to Redmondpie, here is a handy guide to jailbreak iOS 4.0.1 on your iPhone 3G. (NO 3GS Support)
iOS 4.0.1 has been released for iPhone 4, 3GS and 3G. While the iPhone 4 and 3GS users will have to wait for a new jailbreak tool, iPhone 3G can go ahead and jailbreak their phone on iOS 4.0.1 using Redsn0w 0.9.5b5-5. Again, this is strictly for iPhone 3G only. All other iOS based devices will be jailbreakable once Comex releases his new jailbreak tool.
Step 1: Download iOS 4.0.1 for your version of iPhone. Download links are posted here.
Step 2: Update to this latest firmware using the IPSW file you just downloaded via iTunes 9.2.
Step 3: Start Redsn0w 0.9.5b5-5 (download link given below) and point it to iOS 4 (Final Version), and not iOS 4.0.1 firmware file to proceed with the jailbreak.

Step 4: Now select “Install Cydia” and click “Next”.

Step 5: Now make sure your device is both OFF and PLUGGED IN to the computer before you click “Next”.
Step 6: Connect your device in recovery mode by pressing the Power and buttons continuously.

At this stage you will be presented with a screen where you will have to quickly hold “Power” button and then while holding the “Power” button, you will now have to hold “Home” button too. Now after few seconds release “Power” button but keep holding “Home” button until installation begins.
Step 7: Sit back and enjoy while redsn0w will do all the rest for you. Once done, youriPhone and/or iPod touch will restart automatically and you will find it jailbroken on the latest iOS 4.0.1 firmware.

Developer @notcom has been hard at work updating Tiny Umbrella to work for every SHSH controlled device. Since iPhone 4 has been released, he has already updated it six times!

Make sure you have the most current version. Right now it is 4.00.49. Ironing out all the kinks, including developing for iPhone 4 (which he doesn’t even own), must be a real challenge. In his own words commenting on all the updates, notcom says;

A developer known as “notcom“, has released a couple of tools in the past, to help with downgrading yourfirmware on your iPhone 3GS ans iPod Touch 3rd gen. Umbrella was used to back up your SHSH locally, and TinyTSS was used to call Saurik’s server, during the restore process, to grab your SHSH for your firmware of choice. Notcom has released TinyUmbrella, which combines theses 2 programs in one.
TinyUmbrella v 4.00.26 now supports ALL devices running iOS 4, including iPhone 4. With rumours of an update to iOS4 coming very soon, to fix the “death grip” issue, is is important to make sure your SHSHs for iOS 4 are backed up, of you will have trouble with restoring to a previous and/or custom firmware in the future. This version also includes a “Kick out ofrecovery mode” button, for times when your baseband is newer than your firmware, and you get the 1015 error after restore.
TinyUmbrella 4.00.26 is available for Mac and Windows and works with iTunes 9.0 and up. Your device does NOT need to be jailbroken to save your SHSH.
- Open TinyUmbrella and connect your device.

- You can go into Advanced Settings, to manually select your device and where you want to save your SHSHs.

- Then simply click “Save My SHSH”, and TinyUmbrella automatcially grans your SHSH and uploads it to Saurik’s server.

- Then, when you need to restore, click the “Start TSS Server” button, and it will make iTunes call Saurik’s server, instead of Apple, to grab the signature for whatever firmware you’re installing.

Once the restore is complete, you will most likely have a 10XX error. Specifically, iPhone 4will give you a 1004 error, and if your baseband doesn’t match your firmware, you’ll get a 1014 or 1015 error. If you get one of these errors, your device will be stuck in recovery mode. Simply click the “Kick Device Out of Recovery” and your device will reboot to the lockscreen, or activation screen, depending on the firmware you’re using for restore.
This won’t show up in Cydia right away. Give Saurik some time update Cydia to show iOS 4 SHSHs. If you click the “Display SHSHs” button, you’ll see what has been backed up.

If you are on iOS 4 now, we suggest you get your SHSHs backed up, even if you’re not jailbroken yet. It is rumoured that an update is coming soon, and iOS 4 will stop being signed at the time.

Read MoreHow to: Jailbreak older iDevices on iOS4 with sn0wbreeze
Are you still “behind on the times” with an older iDevice? Well, you have a Jailbreaking advantage! Jailbreaks for 4.0 are only available to older iDevices at the moment.
These devices include:
- iPhone 3G
- iPhone 3GS (NOTE: OLDER BOOTROM ONLY!)
- iPod Touch 2G (NON MC MODEL)
Older Bootrom means that the device was bought before Apple updated the bootroms that came on the device…If you are unsure whether or not you have the older or newer bootrom, Redmond Pie has a great write-up on it here.
It is very easy to tell if you have an older iPod Touch. Look at the Model number of your device. (Settings App –> About –> Model:) If the first two letters are MB, then it can be jail broken. If the first two letters are MC, then unfortunately, you are out of luck.
Now, onto the good stuff.
** Please only continue if you have one of the devices listed above. Any other device will not only not be jailbroken using this method, you also risk bricking the device. **
Windows Users
I recommend using sn0wbreeze 1.6.1, which can be downloaded from iH8sn0w’s website here.
Click on the third download button under sn0wbreeze, and download the .exe file.
Once the download completes, run the program. Click ok if you agree, and then you should be greeted with the following page:
Click the arrow in the bottom right to continue. Click “simple mode” and then click continue.
At this point, the program asks you for the iOS4 IPSW file. Links to download these IPSWs, if you don’t already have yours, are available here.
Let the file verify, and follow the next few steps. If you need any help, look up in the top left hand corner of the program for the Help button. Everything you could ever need answered is available there.
Happy pwning!

After you’ve done all this, remember to save your SHSH files so that you can restore back to 4.0 in the future if needed!!
Read More[Guide] How To Downgrade iPhone 3GS iOS 4.0 to 3.1.3 with Cydia SHSH
iHackintosh has put together a great guide for downgrading from iOS 4.0 to 3.1.3, assuming you have your SHSH’s backed up on saurik’s server.
It should be noted however, we have found that you will be required to run iReb or any other Recovery Boot Looping fix. We ran iReb and it worked perfectly, after installing 3.1.3.
Here is their guide:
Apple released iOS 4.0, so as of today, Apple has stopped signing 3.1.3 restore files. That means that if you have a 3GS iPhone you cannot restore any firmware other than iOS 4. If you guys updated to iOS 4 and wanna go back to OS 3.1.3 or below here is the step by step guide to downgrade your iPhone 3GS iOS 4 to 3.1.3 or below. This hack can be attempted only for those, who saved their SHSH to Cydia Server before the release of iOS 4.0 via Cydia “make my life easier” button.
The process is very simple all you have to do is to add Saurik’s Server address to your system hosts file. This trick make iTunes thinks it is talking to Apple, it is talking to Cydia instead while the restoring process. Doing this will allow iTunes to access signatures already stored by Cydia “on file” feature. In simple words this duplicates the functionality exposed by Apple’s signature server, except using “on file” results rather than live request.

- This process is only for those who saved their SHSH to Cydia Server already.
- Read the whole process two-three times before starting the process.
