In the recent installment of iOS 4.1, it appears that there may be a small glitch in the firmware relating to icons. On your home-screen icons can disappear leaving only the title of the Application. While scrolling through various pages on the device, a user may experience an issues where Icons begin to disappear.

For me I would flick through my pages of apps and every time I would flick to a new page of apps a random app’s icon on that page would be missing.

After all is said and done, a simple restore will correct the problem. Fire up iTunes and let it do it’s business. If anyone can get the problem to repeat, or correct it without restoring, drop us a note.

Microsoft has finally announced that starting today Hotmail will support push email, calendar and contacts with Exchange ActiveSync (EAS).

Hotmail users will be able to sync their email, calendar, and contacts to their iPhone using Exchange ActiveSync. So any changes made on the iPhone will be reflected on the web interface, and vice versa.

Dick Craddock from Windows Live Blog explained this briefly :

Hotmail is making it easier for you to stay up-to-date and be productive on your phone. Starting today, you can get your email, calendar, and contacts pushed automatically to your phone using Exchange ActiveSync (EAS). EAS keeps everything in sync between your phone and Hotmail, so whatever you do on your phone, like delete an email, add an appointment, or update one of your contacts with a new number, will also be reflected on the web, and vice-versa. If you use an email client on your PC that already syncs with Hotmail, like Outlook with the Outlook Connector or Windows Live Mail, what you do on your phone will show up there as well, delivering a seamless experience for managing your stuff between your PC email client, your browser, and your phone.

These are instructions on how to setup push Hotmail using ActiveSync on your iPhone or iPod touch. After doing this you will automatically be notified when a new email arrives rather then waiting for a scheduled check.

Step one :

Tap to open Settings from your iPhone springboard.

Last week Apple released iOS 4.0.2 which was merely a patch to block the recently created http://jailbreakme.com, however, interestingly enough, they did not fix the redsn0w exploit for iPhone 3G and iPod touch 2G. So if you own an iPhone 3G or an iPod 2G all you need to do is simply use the lastest release of Redsn0w 0.9.5-b5 beta. This release will also hacktivate your iPhone 3G on 4.0.2, if you have not already been activated using iTunes.

If you require an unlock simply install ultrasn0w.

Requirements:

Redsn0w Tool from Dev-Team

For Windows – Download here

For Mac OS – Download here

iOS 4.0 Firmware

iPhone 3Gs IPSW Link: Download Here

Step One : Create a folder on desktop and name it whatever you want, in the following article we named it iHackintosh. Now put all your downloaded files in the iHackintosh folder. Now connect your iPhone to thecomputer and launch RedSn0w from iHackintosh folder.

Step Two : Now here comes the tricky part, when redsn0w ask you to select firmware, browse to iOS 4.0 ipsw instead of iOS 4.0.2

Step Two : Click the Open button to continue.

Step Three : In next Window check the Install Cydia option. You can select / unselect more advanced options like verbose boot, multitasking, wallpaper etc. Once you selected all required options click on next button

Step Four : Now turn off your iPhone but make sure it is still plugged in to USB port. If you satisfies this term then click next to proceed the next step is to put your iPhone in DFU mode.

Step Five : To put your iPhone in to DFU mode follow the onscreen instructions as follows Hold the Power button for 3 seconds, Hold the Home and Power buttons for 10 seconds, then release the Power button and continuing holding the Home button until your iPhone is in DFU mode.

Step Six : If all goes well, and you put your iPhone in DFU mode successfully then the following screen will appear otherwise you will be prompted to do from Step Five.

Step Seven : That’s it after 5 to 8 minute of process you will get your hands on a Jailbreaked iPhone.

Thanks to Redmondpie, here is a handy guide to jailbreak iOS 4.0.1 on your iPhone 3G. (NO 3GS Support)

iOS 4.0.1 has been released for iPhone 4, 3GS and 3G. While the iPhone 4 and 3GS users will have to wait for a new jailbreak tool, iPhone 3G can go ahead and jailbreak their phone on iOS 4.0.1 using Redsn0w 0.9.5b5-5. Again, this is strictly for iPhone 3G only. All other iOS based devices will be jailbreakable once Comex releases his new jailbreak tool.

Step 1: Download iOS 4.0.1 for your version of iPhone. Download links are posted here.

Step 2: Update to this latest firmware using the IPSW file you just downloaded via iTunes 9.2.

Step 7: Sit back and enjoy while redsn0w will do all the rest for you. Once done, youriPhone and/or iPod touch will restart automatically and you will find it jailbroken on the latest iOS 4.0.1 firmware.

A developer known as “notcom“, has released a couple of tools in the past, to help with downgrading yourfirmware on your iPhone 3GS ans iPod Touch 3rd gen. Umbrella was used to back up your SHSH locally, and TinyTSS was used to call Saurik’s server, during the restore process, to grab your SHSH for your firmware of choice. Notcom has released TinyUmbrella, which combines theses 2 programs in one.

TinyUmbrella v 4.00.26 now supports ALL devices running iOS 4, including iPhone 4. With rumours of an update to iOS4 coming very soon, to fix the “death grip” issue, is is important to make sure your SHSHs for iOS 4 are backed up, of you will have trouble with restoring to a previous and/or custom firmware in the future. This version also includes a “Kick out ofrecovery mode” button, for times when your baseband is newer than your firmware, and you get the 1015 error after restore.

TinyUmbrella 4.00.26 is available for Mac and Windows and works with iTunes 9.0 and up. Your device does NOT need to be jailbroken to save your SHSH.

- Open TinyUmbrella and connect your device.

- You can go into Advanced Settings, to manually select your device and where you want to save your SHSHs.

- Then simply click “Save My SHSH”, and TinyUmbrella automatcially grans your SHSH and uploads it to Saurik’s server.

- Then, when you need to restore, click the “Start TSS Server” button, and it will make iTunes call Saurik’s server, instead of Apple, to grab the signature for whatever firmware you’re installing.

Once the restore is complete, you will most likely have a 10XX error. Specifically, iPhone 4will give you a 1004 error, and if your baseband doesn’t match your firmware, you’ll get a 1014 or 1015 error. If you get one of these errors, your device will be stuck in recovery mode. Simply click the “Kick Device Out of Recovery” and your device will reboot to the lockscreen, or activation screen, depending on the firmware you’re using for restore.

This won’t show up in Cydia right away. Give Saurik some time update Cydia to show iOS 4 SHSHs. If you click the “Display SHSHs” button, you’ll see what has been backed up.

If you are on iOS 4 now, we suggest you get your SHSHs backed up, even if you’re not jailbroken yet. It is rumoured that an update is coming soon, and iOS 4 will stop being signed at the time.

Are you still “behind on the times” with an older iDevice? Well, you have a Jailbreaking advantage! Jailbreaks for 4.0 are only available to older iDevices at the moment.

These devices include:
- iPhone 3G
- iPhone 3GS (NOTE: OLDER BOOTROM ONLY!)
- iPod Touch 2G (NON MC MODEL)

Older Bootrom means that the device was bought before Apple updated the bootroms that came on the device…If you are unsure whether or not you have the older or newer bootrom, Redmond Pie has a great write-up on it here.

It is very easy to tell if you have an older iPod Touch. Look at the Model number of your device. (Settings App –> About –> Model:) If the first two letters are MB, then it can be jail broken. If the first two letters are MC, then unfortunately, you are out of luck.

Now, onto the good stuff.

** Please only continue if you have one of the devices listed above. Any other device will not only not be jailbroken using this method, you also risk bricking the device. **

Windows Users

I recommend using sn0wbreeze 1.6.1, which can be downloaded from iH8sn0w’s website here.
Click on the third download button under sn0wbreeze, and download the .exe file.
Once the download completes, run the program. Click ok if you agree, and then you should be greeted with the following page:

Click the arrow in the bottom right to continue. Click “simple mode” and then click continue.

At this point, the program asks you for the iOS4 IPSW file. Links to download these IPSWs, if you don’t already have yours, are available here.

Let the file verify, and follow the next few steps. If you need any help, look up in the top left hand corner of the program for the Help button. Everything you could ever need answered is available there.
Happy pwning!

iHackintosh has put together a great guide for downgrading from iOS 4.0 to 3.1.3, assuming you have your SHSH’s backed up on saurik’s server.

It should be noted however, we have found that you will be required to run iReb or any other Recovery Boot Looping fix. We ran iReb and it worked perfectly, after installing 3.1.3.

Here is their guide:

Apple released iOS 4.0, so as of today, Apple has stopped signing 3.1.3 restore files. That means that if you have a 3GS iPhone you cannot restore any firmware other than iOS 4. If you guys updated to iOS 4 and wanna go back to OS 3.1.3 or below here is the step by step guide to downgrade your iPhone 3GS iOS 4 to 3.1.3 or below. This hack can be attempted only for those, who saved their SHSH to Cydia Server before the release of iOS 4.0 via Cydia “make my life easier” button.

The process is very simple all you have to do is to add Saurik’s Server address to your system hosts file. This trick make iTunes thinks it is talking to Apple, it is talking to Cydia instead while the restoring process. Doing this will allow iTunes to access signatures already stored by Cydia “on file” feature. In simple words this duplicates the functionality exposed by Apple’s signature server, except using “on file” results rather than live request.

Note:

This process is only for those who saved their SHSH to Cydia Server already.

Read the whole process two-three times before starting the process.

_____________________________________________________________________________________

How to Edit and Save Hosts file in Windows

Open Notepad with Administrative privileges by clicking Start, All Programs,Accessories, and thenright-click Notepad and select to open as Administrator.

Now browse to (C:/Windows / System32 / drivers / etc) in Notepad and open the hosts file, and add the following entry to the bottom of the file.

74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com <————

Now you navigate to files menu and save the hosts file. By doing this you changed the communication server from Apple to Sauriks Server, because your ECID is on that server. Now you can put your iPhone in DFU mode to restore back to to OS 3.1.3 or lower. Follow our previous guide Downgrade iPhone 3G / 3GS

_____________________________________________________________________________________

How to Edit and Save Hosts file in Mac OS X

Navigate to Finder, Click to select Go to Folder… from the Go menu and Enter /etc into the input field and click the Go button.

Now look for hosts file, right click on hosts file and open with Text Edit, and add the following entry to the bottom of the file.

74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com <————

Now save the file and click on Save As.

Because Text Editor can’t save your system files, here comes the tricky part, in save as windows use the following settings, take a close look at the following image.

Uncheck the “ If no extension is provide, use .txt “ and then press the save button.

A host file will be appear on your Desktop, just drag and drop to /etc and follow the onscreen instructions.

By doing this you changed the communication server from Apple to Sauriks Server, because your ECID is on that server. Now you can put your iPhone in DFU mode to restore to any of the previous OS. Follow our previous guide Downgrade iPhone 3G / 3GS

We recently posted a notice to remind users to backup their SHSH blobs prior to the iPhone OS 4.0 release. Many users were asking how this can be done locally, so here is a guide courtesy of iClarified, on how to backup your SHSH Blobs on a Mac.

These are instructions on how to backup your SHSH blobs using Firmware Umbrella.

Step One
Download the latest version of Firmware Umbrella from here to your Desktop.

Step Two
Double click the download zip file to extract it.

Step Three
Launch Terminal from your Applications:Utilities folder

Step Four
Input sudo /Applications/TextEdit.app/Contents/MacOS/TextEdit /etc/hosts and hit the Enter key.

If asked for a password, input your administrative password.

Step Five
TextEdit will open. If there is a line which contains gs.apple.com, remove it then save the file and exit.

Step Six
Open the extracted folder on your desktop and double click the Umbrella.dmg file to mount it. Drag theUmbrella app from the mounted dmg into the folder on your desktop. Then double click the Umbrella app to launch it.

Step Seven
Input your ECID, select your Device Version, and choose a SHSH Repository. If you do not know your ECID you can follow one of these tutorials:
- iPhone: Mac, Windows
- iPad: Mac, Windows

Select Apple from the SHSH Repository dropdown if you just want to query Apple for your SHSH and save it locally. Select Saurik – Cydia from the SHSH Repository dropdown if you want to check Cydia for your SHSH and if Cydia doesn’t have it, it will be stored there.

Click the Submit button to continue.

Step Eight
Once The Firmware Umbrella has completed you will see a status message indicating the SHSH was saved.

Notice a .shsh file will be created in the folder on your desktop. Make sure to save this for future use.

**Thanks to semaphore for his work on this tool!

Now, your stuck with a keyboard-less iPad and you have to get up from the couch, take 8 steps you’ll never get back, and turn off the bluetooth keyboard.

However, Erica Sadun from TUAW decided she had lost one step too many and came up with a simple solution you can get right off Cydia:

I’ve posted a little utility, which I call KeysPlease over on my website (direct application link) and on the ModMyI repository (thanks, Kyle!). I’ve added it to my iPad dock, and now when I’m in the wrong room I just tap the app icon to retrieve my soft keyboard.

So if you’ve found the lack of a soft keyboard while connected to a bluetooth keyboard annoying, go ahead and search for KeysPlease on Cydia; your iPad’s url bar will thank you.

I recieved many requests from people having non-source related problems in Cydia after the last Cydia source fix tutorial. And as I promised, here’s the tutorial on how to fix it. You can now get rid of all those non-source related annoying errors that show up at Cydia start up.

Note: You should have the latest version of iFile installed on your iDevice off Cydia in order to succesfully complete the tutorial.

There are two ways to solve this. Using Terminal or deleting corrupt files. It’s recommended that you try running the command first to see if it helps. If not, then deleting the corrupt files should definately sort this out for you.

On Terminal :

1. Open Terminal on your iDevice. Terminal can be installed off Cydia.

2. Run the following commands:

su

alpine

apt-get update

Note: After running the su command & tapping Enter, the screen would show PASSWORD. Type alpine. The characters will not show on the screen when you’re typing the password.

3. Exit Terminal and respring your iDevice. Than open Cydia to see if the errors are gone. Usually just running the commands should do the trick. If not, continue reading on how to fix them.

Using your iDevice :

1. Open Cydia & read through all the errors. Copy them down as you’re going to need them later.

2. For corrupt source errors, click here. For non-source related errors, continue to the next step.

3. Open iFile & navigate to /var/lib/apt/lists/.

4. Delete all the files that are related to the sources that are not in the Cydias source list but show the error.

e.g. If Bigboss was the source that showed an error as it is in the first image above, than all the files related to Bigboss will be deleted from /var/lib/apt/lists/.

5. Then navigate to /var/lib/apt/lists/partial/ and delete all the files from there that are related as well.

Don’t worry if partial folder does not exist on your device. It’s created by Cydia when a Cydia download is interupted. The partially downloaded files are saved here and at times cause errors at start up.

6. Respring your iDevice and Cydia should work just perfectly.

Using your Computer :

Note: You will need to have a SSH program installed on your computer,Winscp or PuTTY for Windows & Cyberduck or Transmit for Mac, and SSH installed on your iDevice off Cydia.

1. Open Cydia and read the error. Copy them down as you’re going to need them later.

2. SSH into your iDevice using one of the FTP clients mentioned above. For instructions on how to do that, click here.

3. Navigate to /var/lib/apt/lists/.

4. Delete all the files related to the error that showed at Cydia start up.

e.g. If Bigboss was the source that showed an error as it is in the first image above, than all the files related to Bigboss will be deleted from /var/lib/apt/lists/.

5. Now navigate to /var/lib/apt/lists/partial/ and delete all the files that are related from there as well.

Don’t worry if partial folder does not exist on your device. It’s created by Cydia when a Cydia download is interrupted. The partially downloaded files are saved here and at times cause errors at start up.

6. Respring your iDevice and have fun.
