Why the blackberry tablet will fail
There’s been a lot of speculation on the Internet in response of the leaked photos of the rumoured Blackberry tablet. I can see why RIM would want to break into this highly lucrative market, but I reckon it may not be the best move for them. Here’s why…
The Blackberry OS isn’t designed for touch.
My main phone is a blackberry curve. To be frank, I love the OS; but can see the drawbacks of using it with touch. It was designed (rather well) to be used with a trackball, with touch added as a very late afterthought. I have used Storms before, and in comparison to either iPhone OS or Android (which are easy and intuitive to use) it’s just plain clunky. RIM needs to scrap its touch os and rebuild it from scratch in order to get anywhere near the usability of iPhone or android.
There’s not the full range of apps in comparison to the iPad
One of the biggest selling points of the iPad is the range of apps available. Granted, there is a lot of junk out there, *cough* fart apps *cough*, but a high proportion are incredibly useful. There are countless twitter apps for iPhone OS, whereas blackberry OS has about four. There are countless games, taking advantage of the incredibly fast proccessor and large screen. Don’t get me wrong, there are games for blackberry, but they are nowhere near the standard of the ones found for iPhone OS. Like it or not, there just simply isn’t the choice for the blackberry OS.
RIM have a bad reputation in the touchscreen market.
Remember the flop that was the storm? Yeh, so do prospective tablet buyers. The repuatation RIM built up from the unquestionable fail that was the storm will be hard to shake off. Sure, they may have got their act together, but consumers will stick to what they know, going for an iPad.
RIM is a company for businesses, not consumers.
RIM’s stronghold is the workplace. Although, with the new curves and the storm2 RIM is making inroads in the consumer markets, it still has a long way to go before it makes a serious dent. Because of this, moms and so called “silver surfers” (who are one of the main markets for tablets) won’t have experience of RIM and won’t buy it.
It’s codenamed “cobalt”
What sort of name’s this? It’s not even blue. ‘Nuff said.
Although I think the Blackberry tablet is destined to be the next beta-max, I hope RIM manages to overcome all of these points and manages to produce something seriously worth buying.

Adobe CEO: Flash Coming to Android, Palm, and RIM 2nd half 2010
Fox News conducted an interview with the CEO of Adobe: Shantanu Narayen. The main focus of the interview was Adobe’s launch of Creative Suite 5, but during the interview Narayen confirmed that a mobile version of flash would be launched for Android, Palm, and RIM in the second half of 2010. Noticeably (although not surprisingly) absent is Flash’s availability on the iPhone OS. Narayen comments on this, saying that Apple has made the wrong decision, and that this hurts the consumer in the end.
Narayen goes on in the interview mentioning that the Flash Player has been updated, which will allow developers more insight into what customers are viewing.
I for one am very excited for the second half of 2010. Mobile Flash could give operating systems such as Android, Palm, and RIM the edge they need to severely hurt iPhone sales. Not only will the inclusion of Flash allow the viewing of flash content on webpages, Shantanu also states that applications for mobile will be able to be created as well. This would bring a whole slew of new, awesome applications to all three of these operating systems.
Flash Mobile is just one of the great reasons to be a non-iPhone conformist. If this catches on, Apple may have no choice but to loosen up that closed, proprietary operating system they so dearly love.
What are your thoughts? Will Flash Mobile be a game changer? Should Apple take note and allow Flash? Will Android, Palm and RIM sales skyrocket? Tell us in the comments below!

We hate to break your heart in case you were thinking the BlackBerry 9300, the latest BlackBerry smartphone to be outed by UAProf, would RIM’s next big thing, but reality paints a different picture. Based on specifications and from what we’re starting to hear to hear from connects now that the information has slipped out in a semi-official fashion, it sounds like the 9300 will pick up where the current Curve 8500 Series left off and add in a few features. Regrettably the display will be limited to an eye-straining resolution of 320×240, but the addition of 802.11n Wi-Fi and W-CDMA aren’t exactly anything to scoff at when you’re dealing with what is a dependable, and more importantly truly affordable, communications device. We’re still waiting to hear what we’re in for in terms of the processor, memory, camera and other odds and ends (the OS is currently listed as 5.0), but we don’t think such things will be able to remain as secret much longer.
