redsn0w 0.9.6beta5 Out – Tethered Jailbreak
This release jailbreaks iPhone3G, older iPhone3GS, and non-MC iPod touch 2G. It also assists 3G and 3G[S] users with baseband 05.14 or 05.15 who have been stuck without an unlock upgrade their baseband to 06.15 in order to use the new ultrasn0w which was just released. DO NOT DO THIS UNLESS YOU NEED TO. More on that here.
A much upgraded Cydia is also included in this release, which we’ll be writing a full story on in the morning – a ton of great improvements thanks to saurik and chpwn.

AirVideoEnabler Streams Any iOS Video
When Apple announced that AirPlay would be a new feature included in the iOS 4.2 update, many people were eager for its release. However, some were disappointed to learn that only first party apps would be able to stream video. Strangely, Safari is not supported, so internet streaming is not yet possible. AirPlay is capable of streaming video from any app, but Apple chose not to enable it. Fortunately, there’s a jailbreak for that.
Thanks to Erica Sadun over at TUAW, video can now be streamed from any jailbroken iOS 4.2 device using the AirVideoEnabler patch. A single line of code was all that was necessary to enable this feature. With the patch installed, any app can stream video to an Apple TV. For now, the patch is free through Cydia. Streaming to other devices such as laptops, however, is not yet possible at this point.
Unfortunately, not everyone will be able to use this patch right away. Because iOS 4.2 is still a tethered jailbreak for newer devices, most users should probably wait until an untethered jailbreak is made available. Once again, jailbreakers will have to be patient while developers work to fix this problem.
As soon as the latest jailbreak is available, however, this will be the first thing that I download. Hopefully, Apple will come to its senses and enable it themselves so everyone can get in on all the streaming fun. I can’t wait to watch the Daily Show on my Apple TV using Skyfire with the AirVideoEnabler patch installed.

Id Software’s Rage Comes to iOS
Id Software has released Rage, an on-rails first-person shooter for iOS. The game is visually stunning, and is a great demonstration of just how good an iOS game can look. Video games have really come a long way since the iPhone was first introduced three years ago, and game developers like Id continue to push the iOS hardware to its visual limits.
Id Software’s Doom Resurrection was released back in ’09 and it was quite a visual treat back then. Now that Rage is available in the App Store, the bar has been raised once again. Rage is available in two flavors, a standard version ($.99) and Rage HD ($1.99) with higher resolution textures and graphics. Rage HD is definitely the one to check out, but the game requires at least a third generation iOS device or an iPad.
Rage is a rather short game, as it only has three levels. If you’ve played Doom Resurrection then you’ll feel right at home playing Rage. The game play is limited, as it is on-rails, but it works quite well on the iPhone. There’s the usual assortment of guns and ammo to pick up along the way and cash to collect also. Mutants come at you from every angle and some even throw bricks at you.
The game is more of an iPhone preview of Id’s forthcoming console version of Rage, which looks to be another genre defining game by John Carmack. This version of Rage introduces players to a whole new post-apocalyptic wasteland full of new challenges and a wide array of mutants to kill. It should be fun when it comes out in September of next year. For now though, we’ll just have to enjoy the iPhone version in all of its mutant blasting glory.
